Oct. 2010

Well we have had a real treat and great weather to finally get in the harvest. This years carrots were fantastic! There were a few worm holes in the top 1 inch though. I'll have to read up on those. I will attempt to plant next year's carrots this week sometime along with the spinach and garlic. I have an extra bed to play with now; it needs a bit of TLC in regard to the quack grass though. I broke down and asked Kevin to use the rototiller and he obliged so now I just have to sift through it and pick out the roots.

I have sooooo enjoyed the wwoofers we have had here this year. I still can't thank them enough for thinking of hands-on solutions to today's food production difficulties (mild understatement). They are the future of getting people involved in their food and learning about how to make it, prepare it and eat it. The small farmers still trying to make a living will greatly benefit from their help and example. I remember when I had to ask "You homeschool? Is that legal?" and nowadays everyone has heard of it! I look forward to everyone knowing and participating on farms in the future!

Garnet and Clare unearthed a frog when they were digging up the potatoes they had planted earlier this year. It was in its little "nest" of mud and on the side was a perfect little red potato. I will add it as a picture when I get it off the  Camera! I let him go again in the pond on a warm afternoon. I hope he had enough left over stamina to re-dig himself in a safer place!

The Harvest Potluck was fantastic and Rigel enjoyed the extra bodies when we all sang Happy Birthday to him at the campfire! Thank you to Nicolas for chopping the wood and sorry about that nail in your foot!

Marten and Nicolas had a "how fast can we shovel this hay wagon full of manure on to the garden" contest.....4 minutes!!! What men!!

Forest is studying like crazy, eating cereal, kraft cheese slices... and coming home to take his little brother on a bowling and lazer tag date! Thanks Forest!
