7/18/2011 Sun is out again! It has been very rainy this year (something like 33 of the last 40 days?). Well anyway the sun is out now and I can breath again, although not too deeply or I'll suck in the 30 mosquitoes that are always hovering near my face! Thanks to Ronnie's mosquito net hat, I can spend about an hour out there before I go crazy. We had trouble moving the chicken pens on the pasture as there was no where dry enough to put them. I tried putting cut poplar poles in the corners, (held up by the chicken wire) but because they'd never seen them before they didn't know that they should roost on them.... Note for next year: put poles in the brooder house!
The goats have also been unhappy, trudging through muck to get to their pasture..... just wouldn't do it after a day of that, so we now have them in a pasture that was supposed to get a break for summer.... but what can we do? I am seeing how quickly my lofty ideals of holistic management and pasture rotation go down the tubes in adverse weather. The cows seem fine at least, even Squirt the bull is doing fine, despite his daily drenching. Our new goat "Andrea" still doesn't like hanging out with the others and I think she is getting skinny too. I have started giving all of them rolled barley and Diamond V Yeast (a probiotic) with their minerals. So now that the rain has stopped (two more sun days in the forecast) I think I will tackle the weeds. And the cow stall still needs mucking out. Strawberries and cream to any who help! |
